The Courtney Cyclone of 1916. Oscar Carnahan was in school when the storm approached and the teachers let school so the children could get home. "Right away they took to the cellars! They could hear the violent storm outside with a roar of a locomotive freight train", as the cyclone touched down at Courtney destroying the school house, the Davis home and several others. Mrs. Zella Blankenship and child, and Mrs. Virgie Barrett and one year old child were injured. Homes of Frank Parker, Walter Colbert, and Charles and Mollie Beavers were all destroyed. Oscar Carnahan photos. The home pictured above was a small side note in one of the 1916 Courtney cyclone photos. See aftermath of the destroyed school house in forefront. Small images in the background of our photos can often be enlarged such as the one captured here; a home and other buildings in the background. Due to the proximity it is possible that it may be the Carnahan home. (Emma Cook-Carnahan photo collection.)
