Jefferson and Love counties were created at statehood in 1907. At that time the southeastern corner of Jefferson county extended to the mouth of Mud Creek and included the town of Courtney and Bellville. In 1924 the boundary was moved to its current location, placing the communities of Courtney and Bellville in Love county.
